ABOUT US
Founded by a group of professional musicians with a nearly uncontainable love and passion for both baseball and music, The Baseball Music Project is dedicated to fostering greater awareness of the cultural lineage and historical significance of music written about baseball, through concerts, recordings, and related outreach events and projects.
Baseball and music have been indelibly intertwined since the sport's inception. Nearly one hundred songs were written about baseball between 1858 and 1900 alone, and the major collections of baseball music in the USA (the Library of Congress, the Newberry Library, the Levy Collection at Johns Hopkins and the Steele Collection at the National Baseball Hall of Fame) contain nearly one thousand works written about the sport, commencing with the first known piece of baseball music, J.R. Blodgett's "The Baseball Polka", composed in 1858.
More than 2,500 songs have been written about baseball...more than any other sport (and next to love, perhaps more than any other subject). In one rare musical moment, over 1,000 songs were written in just ninety days about just one team (the Hollywood Stars, a Pacific Coast League team, sponsored a three-month songwriting contest in 1954, during which they received over 1,000 entries submitted from thirteen states). The Library of Congress even has a section devoted solely to music about baseball.
When Walter OMalley told Brooklyn he was taking the Dodgers to Los Angeles, Brooklyn hit back hard with baseballs one and only protest song, "Lets Keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn". When Joe DiMaggio went on a fifty-six-game hitting streak, Les Brown and his Band of Renown cheered with "Joltin Joe DiMaggio". When Jackie Robinson broke major leagues color barrier in 1947, the legendary Count Basie and his band paid tribute with "Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?" The Say Hey Kid, Willie Mays, was celebrated in the song "Say Hey" by The Treniers, and Larry Doby was honored along with Robinson in Brownie McGhee's "Robbie-Doby Boogie".
No other sport has seen such a cross-pollination of musician-ballplayers, from Babe Ruth (pianist) to Eddie Basinski (violinist) to Denny McClain (jazz organist) to Bronson Arroyo and Jake Peavy (guitarists), along with ballplayer-musicians from John Philip Sousa to Garth Brooks, to name a few. Sousa even fielded his own amateur baseball team, and Basinski holds the distinction of being the only major league ballplayer to play in a major orchestra in the same season (the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Buffalo Philharmonic, in 1945). And then theres former New York Yankee, Bernie Williamsthe only Grammy nominated musician to also have 4 World Series rings!
The Baseball Music Project celebrates this unique love affair between music and baseball. The concerts feature the greatest music about the greatest sport, with over 2000 images and video from the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum, all synchronized to music, and narrated and hosted by a Hall of Famer.
